Cabinet Serre-Bijoux in sculpted solid boxwood

Base, sculpted segments, moulding work, bracings and panels all in solid boxwood.

Door backing as well as drawer bases consist of stippled und stained maple and stained pear tree marquetry work, with further inlays in boxwood mounted on rosewood.

Upper section mounted on a base of oak and exotic woods, the lower section on a base of walnut and boxwood.

Signature

Engraved signature and stamp of the cabinet-maker « Honoré DUFIN » at various points (on the pediment, the superior boxwood panels, the central and lower drawers, in the cabinet interior, on the base, at the back of one of the drawers, on the frame, etc.).

Handsigned « Dufin + Lyon » on the underside of the drawer belonging to the upper section.

Signature label on the base of the lower section « Ameublements - Sièges - Tentures / Meubles d'Art / H. DUFIN / 49 / rue et place de la République / Ateliers / rue Molière 131 et 133, en face du pont de l'Hôtel-Dieu / LYON »

Signature of the parisian lockmaker « DUBOIS » on the lock.

Notes

This piece was presented at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon in 1884 and cited in the Revue des Arts Décoratifs on page 276 (E.-L.-V. Charvet).

The Collection Fabius Frères possessed two pieces by Honoré Dufin: a centre table and a meuble deux corps, both of which were sculpted from walnut tree wood (Sotheby’s).

Worth noting is that this cabinet was made from solid boxwood and therefore represents an exception among pieces of its size.

From a stylistic point of view it is characteristic of the Historicist current popular in the 19^th century which, through the reinterpretation of previous styles, sought to give the decorative arts a new creative impetus.

Biographie

Honoré Dufin († 1892), cabinet-maker, school of Lyon

In 1876 Dufin set up a cabinet-making workshop in Lyon at 8 rue Saint-Dominique, moving from there to 4 rue des Célestins (1880-1884). On the label attached to our cabinet the address reads: 49 rue et place de la République et les ateliers aux 131 et 133, rue Molière.

Passing away in 1892, the Dufin enterprise was eventually passed along to Henri Bonjour in 1900, founder of a factory and of the Grands Magasins d'ameublements, called “Au Colosse de Rhodes” and situated in Lyon at 29 cours de la Liberté.

In 1872, at the Exposition Universelle of Lyon, Dufin received a silver medal, at the Exposition Universelle of Paris in 1878 a bronze medal. He finished two printing plates for the « Traité théorique et pratique de l'ébénisterie d'après Roubo…», published in 1884.

Possessing a passion for statue art, his will shows that he intended to create a prize to be awarded annually to the most outstanding pupil at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in the area of sculpture.
